Why Stop at Hyaluronic Acid

Why stop at hyaluronic acid?

The beauty industry loves hyaluronic acid – and for good reason. This skin-loving ingredient is naturally produced in your body, its main function to bind water so your skin can better retain moisture. However, the natural process of ageing—not to mention environmental dehydrators like blue light, extreme weather, heating/air conditioning, and pollution—can decrease the amount of hydration in your skin, leading to dry skin that feels tight and uncomfortable.

Hyaluronic acid has always been at the heart of our Moisture Surge formulation, which makes it no surprise that it’s widely loved as one of our best face moisturisers. But with our upgrade to the Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator formula, we not only included two different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, we also expertly blended a new potent ingredient: aloe bioferment into the formula.

Let’s get a little science-y and dive deep into the process.

What is aloe bioferment?

One of the benefits of fermentation is that it breaks apart larger molecules into smaller ones, making them more easily absorbed. With this new ingredient, Clinique scientists supercharges the aloe vera plant through our own exclusive fermentation process. Made with lactobacillus, activated aloe water, and responsibly-sourced and certified organic aloe extract powder, this nutrient-rich ingredient is skin-friendly helping plump skin and retain moisture.

“The process of creating aloe vera bioferment requires mixing aloe vera powder with lactobacillus, the host organism, and allowing it to grow for 24 to 48 hours,” says Steven Schnittger, Vice President, Global Microbiology and Fermentation R&D, Estée Lauder Companies. “We then use a very precise filter to extract the aloe bioferment so that we know it is free of bacteria and contamination. The result of the proprietary fermentation process is an efficacious ferment: aloe bioferment.”

Why stop at hyaluronic acid?

When it comes to hydration, more is more. “While it is widely known that hyaluronic acid binds to water and helps keep skin hydrated, more recent findings show that collagen does this as well,” says Dr. Tom Mammone, Vice President, Global Skin Physiology & Pharmacology, Estée Lauder Companies. “The increase in Type I Collagen observed in vitro helps to explain the increase in total water content, and therefore hydration, in the latter study. In conjunction with other hydration ingredients, aloe bioferment can help hydrate skin.”

Why does this pairing make for a great face moisturiser?

Moisture Surge 100H is a light, refreshing gel-cream that quickly penetrates dry skin yet yields 100-hour hydration–and it’s all in the ingredients. Our expertly blended formua combines hyaluronic acid, aloe bioferment, and other ingredients to help create a “moisture reservoir” for deep, long-lasting hydration. The result? A plump, dewy glow, thanks to hydration that just won’t quit.
